Further to 'Life Without Adobe' thread, there was a time when I couldn't have conceived working without Adobe software. It would have been like losing a limb. But it's a good while back and receding ever further into the distance.
Interesting though how things change, for all kinds of reasons.
Over the last couple of years, an increasing amount of my business comes in via the website. It's got to the point where last year I'd never met (and likely never will meet) about 40% of my clients.
Of four current major projects, three are for clients I've not met, and another prospect is in North Carolina, which I don't seem to be able to find on my local bus company timetable either.
It's taken a while, but recently I've been rejigging my means of communicating with (potential) clients, given historically my proposal documents etc were based on the assumption there would be a face to face meeting.
The change in approach (and discipline in making sure I cover all the bases but keep things more concise) has seen quite a few differences in my approach on that side of things. Couple of things I've not got 100% right yet and I've made a couple of mistakes, but it's all part of the learning curve.
Creatively too I'm working more with wireframes, sometimes slightly 'enhanced' rather than producing full highly-detailed comps.
It's quicker for me - they're greyscale; better for the client - drawing a box rather than using an actual image or graphic focuses the attention on navigation and layout structure and stops the client worrying about the 'wrong' pic.
These are normally created in Illustrator; I'll sometimes produce a full colour Photoshop comp but increasingly I find it just as easy/ preferable to proceed direct to coding 2 or 3 'key' pages rather than messing about with more 'flat graphics.'
My increasing use of the likes of jQuery probably comes to bear here as well, often it's often easier to build a working example than to try and explain it via a Photoshop comp and a couple of similar examples on working sites. Again, seems to me clients focus better when it's their site rather than some anonymous example.
'Clickee' and actually see it working beats 'lookee' and try to imagine it working...
The other factor of course is that these days I do so little print work - and the print industry's changed so much in any case - that pretty much anything capable of creating PDF files will do.
PostScript? Bah. A modern CTP (Computer To Plate) system will happily churn out stuff which would have choked an imagesetter and given a repro dept a collective stroke 10 or 15 years ago.
Snow Leopard might mark a real 'shit or get off the pot' moment. Adobe's installers in recent years are even worse then The Borg's for scattering complete shite through your HD in unexpected/illogical places.
My main HD is now in its fourth Mac, having migrated from G5 to first gen Mac Pro to current Nehalem.
Although I'm pretty fastidious about such thing, inevitably there's an accumulation of crap over that timescale.
My intention when Snow Leopard appears is to do a clean install of everything on a brand new HD. Interesting to see what I really need and what I'm prepared to do without.
