Perhaps. I've never tried welding a website together, so I've got limited experience of what the tools might offer.
A little 'heavy' on the server load I'd imagine...
I think it's as much a matter of GL's 'environment' changing.
I was quite happy to use GL for many years as a 'one-stop' solution. What it did, I genuinely believe it did better than anything else. I've no objection in principle to using an all-in-one tool.
Unfortunately, what I wanted it to do then is not what I want it to do now. For what I want to do now, there are better tools available, albeit not currently in one package.
That's partly me 'evolving' (I'm sorry, that peculiar gurgling sound is my partner snorting into her coffee...) as you suggest, but partly because the web itself has changed so much. Nature of the beast.
The other factor of course is these days I find myself drawn to the small developers who typically tend to be quite tightly focussed on just doing one thing really well. I doubt Sean Kelly's lying awake at night planning a 'Photoshop-killer' or that MacRabbit will diversify into video editing (or arc-welding).
With the ability these guys have to tap into Apple's core technologies, they can produce stuff which I believe not only works better, but looks better and is designed better (not the same thing at all) than anything the big guys are producing.
To me the Coda GUI looks about a decade ahead of DW (which I suppose, in some respects, it is).
A couple of times recently I've shown designers considering moving to the web how I do stuff. They do tend to be a little taken aback that they've never heard of most of the software I use in production, but when they a] see it and b] discover they can buy the whole lot for less than the cost of a GL upgrade in the UK, they get the message pretty quickly.
"You're saying I don't need DreamWeaver?"
"Yes."
"Really? Not at all?"
"Not at all."
"Wow..."
