Should you not have noticed, the offending article was released yesterday.
I'm already amused by the error messages it shows on some of Microsoft's own IE8-specific pages.
Downloading it is a joy, it failed here twice in 'auto-update' mode or whatever it's called because I don't have certain required components for IE7 installed.
Actually, fuckwits, I don't have *any* IE7 components installed on this particular virtual machine, because it's a clean install of XP with IE6.
Manual download and update works fine, but I wonder how many typical Windows users would have given up or just backed away making no sudden movements by that time?
Seems to me typical Windows users are easily spooked by error messages (adopting a similar demeanour to antelope in the Serengeti when there's the whiff of lion in the air...).
Anyway, having brazenly disredarded the risk of being mauled, I notice there's no 'compatibility mode' button visible, despite apparent assurances to the contrary.
Penny eventually drops: this is because my default homepage for Windows is 'blank' as offered by IE8 as one of its default settings. Compatibility mode is *contextual.*
Hmm. Okay, switch default to msn.com.
No compatibility mode' button visible there either.
But there is on <www.flyingsolo.co.uk>
Something begins to stink...
Quick whizz through 50 odd client site homepages in IE8.
3 glitches. Two are definitely CSS-related, although in both cases the stylesheets validate (haven't checked html as yet).
One really bizarre, where IE8 is apparently screwing up a measurement (box model glitch? in IE8?).
Then I notice it's actually re-ordering divs.
What the fuck?
In every other browser, including IE6 and 7, main menu and sub menu appear *above* slideshow.
In IE8, menus appear below the slideshow. How is this fucking possible?
HTML validates, CSS validates.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Microsoft's *interpretation* of web standards.
