Some of you might remember a thread not so long ago about using migration tool from my g5 imac to my new intel imac. It seemed to do a flawless job, but I found the catch. When you do this Apple does not intend for the mac you migrated from to be on the same network as the new one, in their minds you just got rid of it, thus I encountered network permissions problems transferring files between the 2. I spent at least 2 hours on the phone with one of apples techs and after downloading a permissions change tool he recommended we were still unable to accomplish proper file sharing between the 2. Personally I think what causes the problem is the migration tool requires you to use a different user name then you did on the source mac. I finally made a different user name, actually went back to the name I always use and life was good again. So I migrated everything to the new user name and deleted the old one, should not have done that, it creates permission problems of it's own again. Thus every now and again I have to fire up the permissions tool apple referred me to when I want to do things.
Very powerful little tool though and good to have. http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/Welcome.html
My suggestion is if you have a big enough hard drive to just add a new user just for transferring files. You can get files, the problem is putting files. So when all is done and said I wish I'd added the new user only for that and left it at that and continued to use the user originally created. But the tool I listed above can get you around such obstacles, just use with care as it's one very powerful tool and has the potential to lock you right out of your own computer!
