OT: Why isn't the Javascript crossfade working in this script?

Are my browsers too new to have the crossfade in the script in the above page work any more? It's posted via numerous sites but I didn't see any of them having smooth transition/fades from 1 pic to the next. I do note it works in IE but not all that well (rather jarring transition), and no matter how much I tweak duration #s, it doesn't change how the transition behaves in IE.
Some wonk suggested changine duration in the first of the following lines, and deleting the second (which the person seeking help said worked..!), but it did nothing for my situation:
I do note some other seeming irregularities in this script, too, so maybe that's it.
I just want a simple, quick javascript slideshow that enables easy inclusion of captions and smooth cross fades from pic to pic. If you don't think this one will work, can you suggest a solution like this one that does crossfade but is a snap to implement?
