Don't have any "proof" either, but I can assure you that there's been a lot kicked around about this by the Apple people.
Since iWeb has come out, there has been big pros and cons to it. In some ways, it is super, super cool and fun! But if you already know something about websites and such, you quickly find its limitations. And then once you have a really cool site made and you want to "tweak" it or the like and you learn that you can not do anything "pro" like with it, you give it up. So from the start, it has needed a "pro" compliment. iWeb was new when I was at the Apple Store and this was talked about then.
I have a feeling that Apple will do something about this in the near future. I mean, they also make WebObjects, which is way pass anything I understand, but that is the complete opposite end of this spectrum, so to make something to totally kill DW is not out of the realm for Apple. Just look at all the other programs Apple has come out with to go directly against Adobe. Remember Director? I guess there are still people using PowerPoint, but isn't that dead now too? I mean once Apple builds a program for something, it usually rules that category. Like OS.
So if there is something coming out as far as a professional web editing program by Apple, it will be a doozy!
The thing that might happen though is that it will be Safari compliant first and foremost. I'm a FireFox/Mozilla fan and sort of wished that Apple would had stayed out of the browser games.
