My computer is XP with Windows Media Player 11.0.5xxx. It plays mp4 files, but then I also have a codec pack installed that plays most any file, mkv, avi, mp4, etc. Not sure if prior versions of WMP would play the newest codecs. If a computer has DVD software installed, the codecs are usually available. You may run into a situation like I did with Lightbox not working in IE7. In those instances the computers are running Vista with IE7. I'm surprised Windows Update hasn't "insisted" on installing IE8 on those machines.
