Having just watched Letters from Iwo Jima, I am of two points of view as to why Lieutenant Colonel Baron Takeichi Nishi took his Olympic gold medallist show jumper to an island that was sure to experience fierce fighting. Either it was a comment on a Japanese sense of assured win or a comment on animal cruelty. In this same film there is a scene of a Japanese military police ordering the shooting of a barking dog that he equated to showing nationalistic disrespect. I know, it was also to show compassion from the soldier who first tried to save the dog, and also showed the inhumanity of the military police.
I know, this has nothing to do with web design, but I couldn't help thinking it was dumb to take that horse to the island, even if for poetic license.
