No, not one of famous doug's but thought you might enjoy it...
When I was trying to support my 1 year old twins, and house bound, I lived 30 miles outside of a college town. This is pre-internet, pre-computer, mind you. Old timer story.
Anyway, I was a very good writer, and so I posted my "writing services" on the college bulletin boards. I set up a "drop box" at my back door, a wooden thing that would hold large envelopes. Because my (now ex, deceased husband) was always out of town, I was concerned about safety. We lived in the "woods" of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. So folks would drop off their materials and pick up the work on the honor system. I'd write their essays, theme papers and theses for them, full rewrites, or from scratch, or just edits, but typed. Remember, no computers, so this was on a typewriter! They did need to leave me their textbooks for the from scratch stuff, but I had a fast turnaround so it worked out ok.
Remember these kids had to drive a 60 mile round trip in snow country to do this.
I'd attach an envelope to the larger envelop with how much they had to pay, cash only, and they'd leave their money in the envelop and pick up their work. I was NEVER burned. Not even once. And I had repeat clients for their full 4 years at the college. I had one mother call me, in tears, thanking me for saving her son from failing.
I learned more about nursing and jet engines and other fields than I could have learned by doing 10 years of college. It was a bonus!
But then one year, I got a call from the Dean of English. I had become a legend, ie, "call Patrice and you'll get an A." It was true... I made D students into A students ... lol... So this dean pleaded with me not to do this, but I had babies to feed, so I said, "not my problem."
I made a nice living doing this...
Thought you'd get a kick out of my "old timer" story... :-)
