1. OS X defrags itself. Though there are apps that claim to "optimize" files, that's always been a controversial issue. 2. Restarting often fixes problems. But if it does, and you have to to it more than weekly, then something's wrong. 3. Recent versions of OS X don't need to be left on overnight. They run maintenance scripts the next time they can if a time/date is missed. 3. DiskWarrior is the *only* repair app I'd use. Well, except for Disk Utility. It's got a decades-long history of not doing harm. By the way, whether DW catches anything seems to vary with various versions of OS X, or maybe other software. For a couple of years, I never saw a single DW error. Now, I occasionally see a volume information error, the one that's most likely to cause a problem. 4. If you're running Time Machine, you may need to restart and/or run DiskWarrior more often. Or at least that's been my experience. You don't have to worry about TM "errors." That seems to be TM not being able to access a file it wants to copy. But if TM just sits there running for hours, you need to restart and/or run DW on the TM disk. 5. Probably the top cause of sluggish or quirky behavior is a hard drive running low on room. Figure 25% free space. Drives are really cheap these days, and easy to replace in many Mac models. (But avoid large Seagates.) 6. Do you have any peripherals that have buttons on them? These require some app to check every few seconds for a button click. That can cause problems.
