Before taking an HTML web design class I didn't know what a doc type was. The teacher was excellent and well organized. The first thing we learned was why a doc type was important and from that point on we started writing code, from the head tag to the end body tag and everything in between. We had to use Simplepad to write the code, no GUI web software allowed, and then the page had to validate. It wasn't until well into the class that we were allowed to use software to write code.
Best class I ever took. It's just too bad that with an economic downturn local colleges lose their funding and can't offer advanced classes, only beginning. Same with Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. It's a pity that education is the first to go.
