Fri, 08 Apr 2011 02:14 -0400Punkinebershttp://golive.lassotalk.com/376334I've even narrowed it down to two scripts. Maybe one of you could simply look at the scripts and know what to do.
Any javascript geniuses out there?
I'm trying to take a process that already adds:
One type of registrant: $325 Second type of registrant: $300 Third type of registrant: $500
And to that I need to add this:
Fourth type of registrant: $1700 Fifth type of registrant: $3400
Does anyone think they can help me, or am I overstepping the bounds of this group? If I am, you can tell me, but please tell me gently because I can't bear anymore hardship right now. I'm at my limit.
Thanks,
P
P.S.: And I haven't been around not because I don't like you guys, but because I'm afraid of you. You roughed me up pretty good when I was here last. I don't have the tough skin you guys have. I aspire to, though.

so coder-gods... which of the
/^\s+|\s+$/g,""

I am sure the widget author will respond at some point, but for $6 a purchase, I'm sure not high on his list... :-)

I'm using the owner's account, it automatically logged him in when I turned on the computer. Although I don't think he has Photoshop installed, I didn't look beyond the doc. How would I do that? It's been over a year since I used a Mac every day and those things are easily forgotten. I even have to remind myself to use the command key. I do know that I couldn't import to IPhoto because of the scratch or startup disc message. I should just ask him.

I'm on a PC and the site works using the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and IE 8.06. Maybe the thing to do is go to the local library and view the site using a computer with internet access. That's a good way to see if a site breaks. Most likely their computers will be PC running an earlier version of IE.

I have a client looking for an eCommerce site. A good solution would be canned PHP/MySQL tool that will allow:
• user account Creation, Signup and Login;
• Admin access to maintain files;
• user submission of graphic images;
• shopping cart for purchase of graphic images;
• SSL online payment system;
• accounting system to track sales activity, per account;
• update of order status;
• configurable via HTML.
Not being tuned in to that marketplace, I'm hoping you can shine a light in the darkness.
Many thanks and TIA.

Thanks Jeff! I'll go and remove that line of code from all the pages. However, I see there is one not-so-minor margin issue I'll have to resolve and that's with the contact information which is supposed to be under the blue menu bar, not halfway off the page to the right. I know appreciably more about dealing with css now than I did when I built these pages, so hopefully I can fix everything without bothering the list again.
Thanks so much, Jeff.

Well, it certainly would appear that there are no scroll bars on that page and I guess if one had never seen what it's *supposed* to look like it wouldn't look broken ... if one is half blind. <G>
If I remove the line of code and upload the page, would you mind taking another look to see if that fixes the problem, please? I have iE 8 in my version of XP.
I'd say I'd just ignore it, since a recent thread implied that people aren't supporting IE 6 any more but obviously a lot of people who visit this site are antiquated, as there have been about 10 or so complaints about it not scrolling. Not a lot in the whole realm of things but enough to make the client concerned.

Thanks Jeff. I'll take a look at that but nobody who has complained has said that the layout falls apart, per se. They just say they can't scroll, which I think is really strange.

Tue, 10 Aug 2010 05:48 -0400John H. Lincolnhttp://golive.lassotalk.com/376292Sorry for the OT, butÂ…
I have a client looking for an eCommerce site. A good solution would be canned PHP/MySQL tool that will allow:
• user account Creation, Signup and Login;
• Admin access to maintain files;
• user submission of graphic images;
• shopping cart for purchase of graphic images;
• SSL online payment system;
• accounting system to track sales activity, per account;
• update of order status;
• configurable via HTML.
Not being tuned in to that marketplace, I'm hoping you can shine a light in the darkness.
Many thanks and TIA.

Anyway, no scrolling problems seen here. Windows: IE7 and FF, Mac: Safari and FF.
Just as a side note, in IE7 I *do* see a bit of an indent issue with list items within your right-side light green sidebar. The bullets don't show, and the items hang out too far to the left, sticking out beyond the background color.

A site I built a while ago is having issues and for the life of me I can't figure out why. It appears to work fine for people who are at home but if they try from their office (presumably in large companies or a .edu addy) they say they can't scroll around the pages.
Could someone please take a look at www.thevagabondinn.com and see if you can tell what might be causing this problem? It's a site which may sound familiar because I asked for help with positioning some pictures on it when I was first building it. It works perfectly for me on my Mac so maybe it's a PC thing, although I've checked it out in Win XP via Parallels and it works fine in both Firefox and IE.
Thanks!

I apartment sit for him occasionally, and the first time I encountered this machine I thought it was just a huge monitor. I'm like, Holy cow, what is this?" I touched the mouse and the monitor came alive. I looked for the computer in vain, then later he told me it 'was' the computer. Good think he had it in sleep mode because the on switch is well hidden. I'm not fond of the tiny keyboard, but the design of the mouse is much better than prior ones.
The one thing I learned on my visit last week is even thought it's a Mac it still requires housekeeping. I couldn't copy images from my digital camera to the computer because the scratch disk was almost full. I ended up going directly from my camera to a USB drive. It would be more convenient if the USB ports were on the front, but that would ruin the aesthetics. The monitor is definitely impressive, and using the iMac is a good exercise in remembering how to use a Mac. I'm a PC ;- )

The main difference with the Mini is the video card, in that it doesn't actually have one, and that it uses an integrated chip instead. With a lot of the image processing now being done by the GPU on the video card, you'll often get better performance from an iMac, MacBook Pro, or Mac Pro, than you will from a Mini. While that is improving as the integrated video improves, there is still a big difference between the two, which *may* mean that some workflows are slower on the Mini than on the others.

Live Picture was acquired by MGI which ceased development, and in turn MGI became Roxio and they just weren't interested in that sort of thing. There is still a "dwindling" band of Live Picture users (I myself used it for many years) but its use becomes increasingly difficult, requiring a PowerPC box running Classic. I do still have such a machine myself but haven't booted it up in over a year. But the Live Picture list still continues (much as this one does after the demise of GoLive) with a bunch of old buddies keeping up with each other and chewing the cud over things old and new.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. ;-)
The first web browser was created on NeXT, and many principles established then have survived in OS X, including the Dock for instance.
NeXT also created the idea of allowing third-party developers to 'tap in' to the underlying OS technologies, which lives on in the ideas of the 'Core' libraries in OS X which is essentially what allows the likes of the guys at Pixelmator to create astonishingly polished and capable apps, way beyond what they could produce with their resources if they had to create everything from scratch.
In a very real sense, you're using the legacy of NeXTstep every day.

Photoshop CS5 runs 64-bit, but running it that way eliminates your ability to use most of the plugins available for it, at lease until the filter vendors rewrite their products for 64-bit mode.

Which reminds me, way back, years ago, I came across a semi-quasi- pseudo Photoshop-like image editor demo at some university that as I remember was quite impressive. The author of it lamented that unfortunately, it would never be a competitor for Photoshop, because it was built on the NextStep operating system, which had made it comparatively easy to create.
NextStep, as I recall, was something Steve Jobs came up with when he had gotten bounced out of Apple for some raisin I forget. Then he came back, but I never heard of NextStep or that image editor again.

Yeah... I've been shocked by that a few times, too. But they didn't seem to notice how horrible it looked,

Indeed. But I'd still maintain that for most folks, myself included, a maxed out (RAM) iMac, mini or MacBook Pro will do the job just fine.
I moved from a first generation (Core Duo) Mac Pro to third generation Mac Pro (Nehalem quad core) and while it's a bit faster, it's not life-changing. (A large part of my motivation in doing so was to be able to use video cards which support the Mini DisplayPort).
I know a couple of folks in pro music/video production who do need fully tricked out Mac Pros with maximum everything, but in their context some of the third party video/audio cards cost pretty much the same as the Mac itself, so you can easily get to 5 figures for their workstations.
Photoshop's a long way off being the most processor-challenging app you can run on a Mac these days, and if Adobe ever get their fingers out of their butts and build an OS X 64 bit version on a clean rather than antique code base that'll be even more true.

Not so easy.
What they see on your screen's not the issue. It's *their* screen which scares the shit out of me...

Easy.
If you don't show them your screen, they won't know what they are missing.

Yep, having a penchant for adding PCI cards would seem to be the mitigating factor.
I've been using a 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 for a couple of months, and it is wicked fast and capable! In fact, I had to remove the Finder's quit capability, as I was constantly inadvertently quitting it when quitting other open apps. It would zip right through 2-3 apps to the Finder.

Sun, 08 Aug 2010 04:54 -0400Rev. Steve Willishttp://golive.lassotalk.com/376264Right after the Nehelem-processor Mac Pros were released, I blew a chunk of change on a BTO quad-core 2.66GHz model. Because I work for an Apple-certified educational institution, I bought it from the online education store at a nice discount (I don't remember how much I saved by buying educational, but it was significant).
I equipped it with 6GB of RAM, 2-1TB drives, dual NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 video cards, dual SuperDrives and AppleCare. Also got CS4 for a huge discount (online pkg deal with new CPU purchase). It came with Leopard and I've since updated to Snow Leopard.
Whole thing came in at about $3900.
After I purchased the system, I added an already existing 500GB eSATA drive to an internal bay for use as a BootCamp drive running WindowsXP under vmware Fusion. The second 1TB drive became my Time Machine drive (I also backup online to MobileMe).
To put it in perspective, I purchased my 867MHz G4 tower with 1GB RAM, 2-82GB drives and MacOS 9.2 in 2001 for right at $3000. I also purchased my first Mac, a 512K Fat Mac with MacOS 1.0 with an AppleWriter I dot-matrix printer and Lotus Jazz for $3000 in 1985.
Also, take into account the rate of inflation from 1985 until now and my Pro was a STEAL by comparison.
Monitor-wise, I have 2 HP w2207 1680x1050 flatscreens, which I got from Amazon for $200 and change each, purchased a few months prior to the Pro.
So as far as I'm concerned, the expenditure was WELL worth it. This Pro runs RINGS around ANY Mac I've ever used. I consistently run simultaneously CS5 Photoshop/DreamWeaver/Acrobat, MySQL Workbench, TextWrangler, Mail, Safari, Chrome, FireFox, Skype, and miscellaneous other apps as needed and it NEVER bogs. When I play graphics-intensive games, such as Half Life 2 or Halo, I can now always run them at the highest graphics- and sound-quality settings across the board.
Best $3800 I ever spent!
FWIWTY!

I think Miles said he had a psychological prejudice in favor of the Mac towers. Me too and then some, it's just what I've used for quite some time. But the new Mac Pros seem both wickedly and wackily expensive to me. The new Quad-Core starts at $2500, according to apple.com. And that's with the chip they're calling lesser (the 2.66Ghz instead of the 2.93 or 3.33), just one internal hard drive, and just slightly more RAM than I have in my several-years-old G5. That's not even with larger hard drive capacity or extra graphics stuff.
Sheesh!
Memory might be failing me here, but I think that's more than I paid for my G5 back in the day.
And obviously, I know this would be a superior computer to what I have now, but . . . isn't this stuff supposed to be getting a lil' cheaper? The technology related to the tiny stuff (ipads, iphones, ipods) certainly seems to be. What's up with the Mac Pros?

If I don't need extra monitors or really macho Photoshop whatever, what do peeps here think I might need for my next computer? What might be the best thing? Really, right now, my most important problem is slowness of large database operations with Filemaker Pro. I don't do much else currently that's severely intensive. I would LIKE a computer that can do whatever I want in the future, but that's my most immediate concern. It seems silly to me to buy a computer with a built-in monitor when I already have one, but I guess I could do that if the price really dictated it.
I have attempted to do some research online, and the Macworld link was helpful, but if anyone has any idea about FM Pro stuff, that'd be cool. I'd actually rather the opinion of this list to other random stuff.

The new Mini is a beautiful thing and a bit of a design/engineering marvel, minimised and condensed down to the essence of a computer.
Paired with a nice monitor and maxed out RAM, it's a very capable machine indeed.

Yup. I have a Nehalem Mac Pro with 10GB RAM, but in many respects that just shows I'm stuck in my ways.
My days of real 'f***-off heavy lifting' in Photoshop are pretty much long gone, bar the odd graphic for a display panel.
Main reason for anyone buying a Mac Pro is to stuff it with various specialist/video cards ( I run 3 monitors, one 24", two 23" Cinema Displays - but even then that's largely a legacy from wanting to have multiple palettes open in Adobe apps).
Other factor is multiple HDs, the Mac Pro has 4, one SSD boot drive, one Photoshop scratch disk (again, old habits die hard) and two for storage, with a 4 bay Drobo for good measure.
But to be honest, any current iMac would be perfectly adequate for what I do, especially given one can now use a second monitor to extend your desktop.
If I was starting again from scratch I'd buy a Mac mini (it's not a mini-mac, that's a small burger) and a big monitor or two if I was on a budget, or a mid-range and up MacBook Pro.
In truth I just have, I use a 2010 Mac mini with 8GB of RAM as a music player, and to be honest that would be fine for my professional needs. Leave any G5 in the dust on Photoshop. Only limitation of the mini (theoretically) is 5400rpm drives in the standard version, but I doubt it's that significant in practice.
Couple of professional photographers I know have recently moved to 17" MacBook Pro and 27" iMac form G4 and G5 respectively, which they're retaining to use with legacy large format printer/scanners - you can't jam a SCSI card in an iMac, both are delighted with new hardware performance.
As Martin suggests, get any new Mac and stuff it with RAM, it'll be fine.

A while ago I came across a performance comparison iMac vs Mac Pro. The Mac Pro only ever had a distinct advantage for extremely processor intensive tasks such as rendering digital video. Actually it was marginally outperformed by the iMac in a few tests. Their conclusion was, that most professional users should be more than happy with the iMac - stuff it with memory and off you go.
Personally I doubt, I will ever buy a desktop/tower again. For what I do, the Mac Book Pros are more than adequate.

Me too. "Can afford" is the controlling term in my case. [-----] > Hope that helps... probably not... :-)
Well, it's pretty good for a girl. :-)
No, really, given your situation, I'd do the same. I don't have a 30" Apple display, and as they have discontinued them, and they are kind of expensive, I am not planing on trying to grab one of the last ones on the shelf. The 27 inch is appreciably bigger than I have not (24 ") and it seems to be much better quality. And the iMac is more computer already than the G5 I currently own.
Besides, I really want to get me a 24 inch wide printer, and those things don't come cheap. I missed a deal on an Epson 7800 in San Francisco ... a photographer there let it go for $750 pick up only, and SF is only 84 miles from here, but I was too slow. I just stared at the screen while somebody put in the last bid and got it. Been looking ever since but nothing like that has come up. I'm surprised she let it go for that price. Been looking at smaller printers, but they just aren't what I want. I think a 27 inch iMac and an Epson 7800 would be real nice.
:-)
Thanks for the info, and it was really helpful.

I always like to get the most machine I can afford. Psychological, I guess. When I bought the G5, I walked into the Apple store and said "give me the biggest baddest machine you have... " Since it runs all day, every day, and is a workhorse, I just want as much as I can afford. This purchase was pending, but since I was forced into it a bit earlier than I had planned, it's not as tricked out as it could be, but I think it will be fine.
My research wasn't that indepth. I found what I wanted, or thought would be a good match, and then checked with fellow mac users who do print and web work, and found that they also purchased mac pro, so that was very comforting.
One colleague who is also about to buy a new intel, was looking at the mini-mac. But just the name of it put me off! :-) Another colleague suggested that the mini mac didn't handle heavy photoshop work well, and my colleague, who is print and heavy into PS, appreciated that heads up and is continuing her search and decision making process.
Hope that helps... probably not... :-)

Hi, Patrice ... I don't know the answer to your question, but it arouses one of mine, since my G5 is getting long in the tooth.
Looking at the new 27 inch iMacs, which are so far beyond my G5, I don't see any good reason to go for a Mac Pro this time. I have 2 drives in my G5, a 1 TB and a 500 GB, but frankly I have never needed them both. And with the iMac 27 inch I won't have to buy a monitor, too. (Not completely happy with the Samsung 24 inch monitor I have now.)
Maybe the reasons for your choice would be good education. I think you tend to research things rather thoroughly.

Patrice,
When I migrated to a new Mac a couple of months ago, I had to call Adobe to deactivate/reactivate GL9 (lots of trouble for a dead crappy app). They eventually got me back in business.

I migrated from the salvaged HD to new Mac Pro. 99% of stuff is working fine. GL6 is fine, but not GLCS2. And CS2 isn't on my G4, so only one serial activated.
I'll try calling Adobe again. I was on hold for over an hour last night and gave up. But it is the weekend, I guess. :-(
Thanks much

Did you install any newer version first? I discovered earlier this year that if you install any newer version first, earlier versions won't work.

I had to call Adobe support to get them to deactivate and reactivate... even they had some issues, and finally had to send me an archive of new licensing files and instructions to get things to work.
Hope this helps, Craig

A semi related question: if my G5 died, I can't deactivate the serial number. The only way I could get DW CS4 to launch was to deactivate on G4. However, so far, only DW is showing this problem. Indesign was fine.

Sat, 07 Aug 2010 04:16 -0400schttp://golive.lassotalk.com/376245Have been using MenuMachine as an include in a ColdFusion CMS for years - without editing capabilities.
Just found that my CF programmer is able to work editing into ProjectVII menus and am using two of them on a project. He has the page headline become the menu item - placement is by page ranking and section selection ....
The original menu had to be created in DW - which still looks odd in GL when I jump back and forth between DW & GL - something I do quite often on each page.... but is workable ... do-able. Would not expect this to work in a non-custom CMS like Cushy...

Got it. Thanks Dave.
As I’ve written off mobile devices to date, what’s another browser version or two?
Ha Ha. Just joking

Fri, 06 Aug 2010 08:23 -0400David Miershttp://golive.lassotalk.com/376242It manifests itself in IE 7/8 only, and hit and miss only, my friend had 4 computers at home all xp pro and IE 7 at the time, the problem showed on 2 and not the other 2. Reloading page would sometimes make it work. It manifests by not showing flash the most often and sometimes by a disappearing menu, or even both. It has also been seen in the wild on Vista with IE, not sure about Win 7.
This is one of the pages at the time that were killing us:Warning This little flash player is noisy and is on auto start: Yes I tried, he's a DJ and NOISY:
http://www.musicmastersdjs.net/index.htm
The cure seen used on this page is the dynamic swfobject method where a div ID is used for placement and the code can be anywhere on the page. As seen in my example you'll note that I'm not even loading the script in the <head> as one normally would, but have it and the flash code just before the ending body tag. I probably could have left the script in the head, but this was one of those days where extreme frustration had set in and when I had it working I wasn't messing with it anymore that day, which turned into why bother, it works.
Now since I have 2 MM menus on this page I was dealing with a double whammy and if your flash is in content after your MM nav it will likely be ok. Patrice discovered the CS4 Dreamweaver version of the swfobject problem with flash headers above the MM menu, so again you see it's all about MM insists on being first or it won't play nice.

Alright. That makes sense. You know, last night I searched for instructions as to how to set up content for ssi's, and of about a dozen I looked at, not one explained how you format it. Apparently it's one of those things everybody knows, and if you have to ask, you are probably too stupid to use it anyway.
Reminds me of the college physics textbook I once had in which the author brought up the point that no other textbook he had ever seen contained a description of an electric motor that would actually work, because they all omitted the fact that the casing was part of the electrical circuit, or some little detail like that.
Anyway, Thanks. Much appreciated.

The code that is inserted to the page from the include can have the formatting, but we'd normally put the div in our page, such as:
The include will insert all the code from the "your-menu-file.php" page as if it had been written as part of your receiving page.
As such, the included page can contain just the code--no need for the doc type, head, title, body tags, etc. in the your-menu-file.php page.
