Just to clarify a couple of things which have come up offlist, I'm not against the idea of jQuery plugins.
Far from it, I use a 'core set' all the time, generally I don't want/need to re-invent the wheel either.
But bear in mind the better you understand the underlying principles, the better you'll be able to:
a] understand what's going on and change it if need be;
b] assess the quality of them (including if something better comes along);
c] re-use them in different ways on different projects with minimum effort
I've said before, there's hundreds/thousands of them, and they're invariably free, which is great, but the quality is variable, which is not so great.
I've found bugs or errors in plugins/tutorials before, I expect to again. It's handy if you can fix them. Sometimes there's simply too much code, a sin of which everyone seems guilty on the lower slopes of the learning curve, myself included.
(I look back at some of my old stylesheets and reckon I could typically do the same now in about 50-75% of the code).
And sometimes plugins have a lot of code you simply don't need for a specific task; on one job recently we reduced 100 plus lines of JS to 17, which was all we needed for that application.
The handy knowledge to have is which 17 lines are the ones to keep...
